How Have Wikis Assisted 21st Century Learning?

Image
Wikis have become a fundamental trademark of 21st Century learning. For one, wikis symbolize the increased use of technology in learning nowadays, showing that online encyclopedia sites like Wikipedia may be on the way to replacing traditional textbooks. Wikis also symbolize the 21st Century Learning ideal that students must do their own research via technology to study and learn. Wikis are the heart of this ideal because they allow users to upload their own articles and edit others' articles, and through these processes, users get to learn even more about a topic than they would have by just reading a textbook. Thus, not only students get to do their own research using modern internet technology, but they get to practice their research by officially publishing their own information to public outlets! In my personal experience, I found that I understood and memorized important concepts the best when I personally practiced them. For example, after writing four blog e...

How Has Technology Helped Education Evolve?

Modern technology like the internet and computer have become fundamental instruments for learning, replacing old-school methods like libraries and teacher lectures. Now, with a few clicks of the mouse, any student can access a search engine on the Internet, enter a few keywords, and find millions of results about any possibly topic they are interested in. In other words, technology has been a key channel in transforming student learning from teacher-dependent to self-dependent. Self-dependent learning and research is one of the key fundamentals of 21st century learning, and modern technology makes it easier than ever. Recent internet innovations like web 2.0 have also transformed education in other ways. The interactive user participation features that have arrived to numerous websites with web 2.0 allow students to not just do research but to collaboratively discuss it with others within the virtual world, as well as polish it through their own blogs and professional revisions on ...

Podcasts and Vodcasts

Image
A podcast is essentially an audio-only radio-style broadcast about any topic. A vodcast is similar to a podcast but the presentation includes video as well. A podcast is best used for the types of audio recordings that one would typically hear via radio. Vodcasts are used better when the presence of video is essential to comprehend the content being shared via audio at the same time (since vodcasts are basically podcasts with video). Weather forecasts, breaking news events, biographies, and street directions can all be told via podcasts. Vodcasts could be good for documentaries, short comic clips, nature presentations, or even some advertisements. One of my favorite podcasts is Outside/In , a documentary series that describes the complex interactions between the human system and the environment as a whole. Do you have any favorite podcasts or vodcasts? Link them in the comments below and let's chat! (hey, isn't that what we have web 2.0 for?)

What is 21st Century Learning and How Does Web 2.0 Relate?

Image
21st Century Learning is a new, modern line of thought about how education must be achieved in today's world, and how it must relate and interact with the many emerging technologies of the 21st century. Teachers still use old-school methods for tutoring students in traditional classroom settings. Having been educated decades ago, teachers are not able to adapt their tutoring techniques easily to new technology, and the fundamental principles of 21st century learning are designed to increase the connection between student learning and the new technologies that are available today. Computers are examples of technology essential to student-centered research in 21st century learning The internet, computers, and smartphones have all facilitated access to an incredible variety of information about all kinds of topics imaginable - information that people once had to look for hours in libraries, skimming through thick encyclopedias. Before all of this technology existed, the most e...
